Type of Thyroid Problems


Basically, there are two sorts of thyroid problems - hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

  1. Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the gland produces excessive amount of hormones which cause the start of various internal problems. A hyper active thyroid usually leads to excessive thyrotropin (TSH) secretion in the blood stream, Grave's disease, and the formation of nodules in the gland.
  2. Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, is a condition wherein there is a dip in the thyroid hormones in the blood and the gland causes less production of essential hormones, which further hampers the proper functions of many other related organs. Both the thyroid conditions are dangerous for the human system and hence, maintenance of the health of the thyroid gland is very important.

There are a few tests that are associated with the diagnosis of proper functionality, and production and release of the essential hormones in the bloodstream. These are as follows:-

  • TSH Test
  • Free T3 and T4 Test
  • Reverse T3 Test

  • Meat:  lamb, beef, chicken, etc.
  • Fish: All seafood, including salmon, tuna, shrimp, halibut, etc.
  • Vegetables:  All vegetables except cruciferous vegetables which can be consumed in moderate amounts, especially when cooked.
  • Fruits: All fruits, including bananas, berries, oranges, tomatoes, etc.
  • Gluten-free grains and seeds: rice, buckwheat, quinoa, chia seeds, and flax seeds
  • Dairy products: All dairy products, including milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.
  • Water and non-caffeinated Beverages

Iodine-rich foods

  • iodized salt

Soy

Food to eat with hyperthyroidism

Low iodine foods

Person with hyperthyroidism need to follow a low iodine diet.
  • noniodized salt
  • egg whites

  • vegetable oils
  • sugar, jam, jelly, and honey
  • unsalted nuts and nut butter
  • soda and lemonade
  • moderate portions of chicken, turkey, beef,  veal, and lamb

Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables contain compounds that reduces thyroid hormone production and may reduce iodine uptake by the thyroid. These effects may be proved very beneficial for a person suffering with hyperthyroidism.
On the other hand, person with hypothyroidism (decreased thyroid function) should avoid eating large amounts of these foods.
Cruciferous vegetables include:
  • Brussels sprouts and cabbage

People with hyperthyroidism have vitamin D deficiency. The primary source of vitamin D comes from sunlight, when it hit the skin so that the body can make its own.

  • fortified cereals

Spices

Turmeric, a wonder spice, has anti-inflammatory properties may reduce the frequency of thyroid disease.
Researchers have found certain spices, including turmeric and green chillies, are beneficial in hyperthyroidism.

  • Fish, shellfish, organic chicken or turkey
  • High-quality protein such as low-fat dairy, eggs, beans, and unsweetened yogurt



Avoid or Eat these less


  • Deep-fried foods  or trans fats from partially hydrogenated
  • Packaged and fast foods, especially those high in sugar, baked goods, sweets, chips, desserts
  • Sugary cereals,  white bread, , refined pastas or rice
  • Processed meat and red meat
  • Prefer low-fat products that have replaced fat with added sugar, such as fat-free yogurt
